Not everyone knows, but everyone who has a basement sump pump should know, what happens when a rainstorm causes a big influx of ground water into their sump. Normally, the sump pump will come on more often and pump out the excess water.
You need a 1/3 horsepower or larger backup pump to have sufficient power to keep your sump pit from overflowing when your primary pump fails or if electricity is knocked out for very long when there is water coming in.
The bad news is that during a lot of rainstorms, the home can lose electrical power, (And you just know it will happen in the middle of the night!) The pump will not come on when it should. This truly is bad news, because your basement and everything in it can be ruined by a flooded basement. This can cost you a lot of money to repair the wall panels, carpet, furnace, washer, dryer, workshop and tools, etc. Of course, some things are not replaceable. Things like heirlooms, documents, pictures, … the list goes on.
Flood insurance may well not pay or pay enough.
Your sump pump may fail to come on for several reasons. It is best to check the operation of the pump several times yearly. Keep in mind though, that it Will fail eventually.
The good news is that you can be better prepared for such an eventuality, by having a good battery backup sump pump system. The Wayne ESP25 12 Volt 3300 Gallons Per Hour Battery backup High Pumping Capacity Sump Pump System is one such system. Buy it and relax, secure in the knowledge that your basement will be much better protected by the best battery backup sump pump system.

5.0 out of 5 stars backup sump pump October 31, 2011

Straight forward installation, no problems, everything worked as advertised. Seems to empty sump pit as quickly as primary pump. Since this is a battery backup sump pump, it may be quite a while before this pump has to do its job. Its comforting to know its there, if needed. The instructions advise to check operation once a month to avoid problems. There are better battery backup sump pump systems out there, but they cost several times what this one did. In my opinion this pump is a good value and will do the job if called upon.

Purchased the ESP25 as a backup along with an AGM battery (80amphrs). Had plumber install and test the combined ac & dc pumps on June 25, 2010. I will report back, after one or more actual emergencies. The Wayne Water System folks claim this 3300 gph system has a running time of 6 hours, which seems much better than what you potentially …

I reviewed lots of backup sump pumps online, and I chose the Wayne ESP25 for its capacity and maintenance free battery. I installed the unit in one day, and it works well.

This pump does everything it states and more. I have a full basement that has flooded many times. My old bilge pumps would never keep up. When I activated the switch for the first time it drained a 10 gallon sump in seconds. I just order the MK gel battery, and hope it will perform when the power goes out. Fast shipping good installation instructions. The only modification was changing the solder less connection to one size larger for the Positive screw post.
5.0 out of 5 stars I know its expensive… but it is worth every penny., December 7, 2012

This system works out great for me as the sump in my home always has water in it. The pump itself moves water very efficiently out of the sump. As a backup system it is awesome. It is nice when the power goes out to have about 24 hours time (if I am at work) to get home and get the generator going. It was a snap to install and would highly recommend this over other backups because of the size of the pump and the quality.

After Sandy knocked our power out, I was counting on my Basement Watchdog Emergency sump pump to help deal with the water that was coming into our French drain in our finished basement.
Within the first 6 hours, the Basement Watchdog simply failed to pump out enough water to keep the drain empty. It was coming on every few minutes because it couldn’t evacuate the water from the pit. I went down the the basement and took apart the entire pump to see if there was an obstruction because it wasn’t moving any water. Nope. But because it was running for an extended period of time, it drained the battery.
This led to me scooping water into buckets for 7 days straight until our power came back. Never again.
It turns out that the Basement Watchdog Emergency is simply insufficient to move any volume of water if you have a 10 ft run (8 ft ceilings, 18″ sump pit, 2 bends). Instead of just getting a new battery, I decided to replace the whole thing.
The first thing to note is that **THIS UNIT DOES NOT SHIP WITH A BATTERY**. You will have to order it separately (hard to find right now).
The second thing to note is that this unit is hefty. I was pretty impressed when I picked it up. The pump unit weighs at least 2x what my Basement Watchdog weighed. The construction is also much more solid and the plastics seem more sturdy.
I installed the unit myself over two days (to let the PVC cement dry) and was eager to test it as the pit was filling with water from the snow melt of the Nor’easter that came through after Sandy. All I can say is that this thing is a *BEAST* and at least as powerful as my primary Flotec pump if not more so. It cleared the sump pit even faster and more furiously than my primary pump.
I have no doubts about the ability of this pump to empty the sump pit in the event of a power outage and heavy rains or snow melt. Because it’s so efficient at evacuating the pit, it doesn’t have to come on as often or stay on as long so hypothetically, it should mean that the battery should have plenty of juice for an extended outage.
I’m amazed and glad that I purchased it and I definitely have a greater sense of peace of mind with this unit. Hope it works when it counts, but I’m thoroughly impressed with the performance of this pump.

Spend the extra money and order the ESP25 over the ESP15. The difference is remarkable. I plumbed the discharge into my existing sump pump discharge and the results are impressive. The ESP15 had issues with my lift of 13+ total feet. The ESP25 blows the water out of my sump pit with ease. I can have an easy mind knowing that my primary pump is backed up with something that is on par or even better than my primary sump pump.

The Wayne ESP25 back-up sump pump is indeed a great little system. There are many out there there that are suitable back-up systems, but I’ve installed six of these in the past 3 years for my family and rental properties I have. The reason is volume capacity, space, and float.
I doesn’t use a swing float or vertical float switch; it uses a very small magnetic reed switch (which attaches to the ejection riser pipe to activate the pump and automatically shuts off after 20-25 sec of run time) this keeps a very small diameter profile when space is tight because of larger main pumps, especially if the main pump uses a swing float switch. It’s a 1-1/2 FIP connection, the body is a plastic assembly so it is light enough to suspended it from a pipe clamp and has good volume capacity (3300 gpm peak), and the battery case will hold regular and long deep cycle marine batteries.
The last outage was 16 hours and the pump kicked on about once every 15 minutes at first (a two hour rain storm), and every 45 minutes when power came back, the battery level was a little less than mid level.
I have (2) 5500/8275 WATT back-up generators that I would truck to where needed, but I need to be home when I get the call, and that buys me about 1 hour before sump pump pits will over flow into the finished basement. The Wayne ESP25 allows me plenty of time and more peace of mind in case of long outages.
Turn on your speakers, then get out the popcorn! It’s movie time!
